UNSW Scholarships - General Scholarship and Award Conditions

1. Enrolment

Unless specified otherwise in the offer letter it is a condition of award that Scholarship/Award recipients maintain their enrolment at UNSW over the academic year. You must notify UNSW Scholarships in writing (scholarships@unsw.edu.au) within 7 days should you, be absent from your studies for more than two weeks during any UNSW term or of any change which may affect your eligibility for the Scholarship/Award.

To meet the enrolment status requirement across the academic year (Term 1-Term 3), you must enrol in at least 1 course each term.

If you are enrolled in less than 36 Units of Credit (UoC) across the academic year your Scholarship/Award may become taxable as Scholarships/Awards paid to part-time students may be considered taxable income. UNSW does not withhold tax paid for Scholarships/Awards paid to part-time students.  It is the responsibility of Scholarship/Award recipients to check with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and/or an independent tax adviser to ascertain if the payments they are receiving are classified as taxable income. For more information on whether or not your Scholarship/Award is taxable please go to the Scholarship page on the ATO website.

For Scholarships/Awards where the duration is based on the normal minimum duration of program, the duration is calculated based on students enrolling in 48 UoC each year. If you choose to enrol in less than 48 UoC, with at least one course in each term, you will meet the enrolment requirement, however it may take you longer to complete your degree and your scholarship would not be extended. Please refer to your offer letter if you are unsure of your scholarship duration.

You are required to adhere to your program structure and enrol in courses each term that are aligned with the scholarship offer.

UNSW may share updates regarding your progress with the scholarship donor. This may include information about your academic or personal achievements as deemed reasonable by the University. You may also be invited to meet with the donor and provide feedback.

2. Satisfactory Academic Progress

Recipient's academic progress will be reviewed each term and continuation of the Scholarship/Award is subject to satisfactory academic progress, i.e.maintaining enrolment, , an academic status of 'Good Standing'* (unless specified otherwise), and academic progress requirements as stated in the Scholarship/Award offer letter.

*All students start with Good Standing. If you pass 50% or more of the units attempted, your standing remains as Good. Academic standing is calculated using the percentage of load passed in the current term/semester as well as your academic standing at the end of the previous term/semester.

Refer to the UNSW guide on Academic Standing

3. Deferment or Program Leave

Unless specified otherwise in the offer letter recipients are not permitted to defer the commencement of the Scholarship/Award.

If the recipient has completed one term of studies, the recipient may request UNSW Scholarships (scholarships@unsw.edu.au) in writing to place the Scholarship/Award on hold for the duration of approved leave of absence from study. If approved, the Scholarship/Award payments will be suspended for the duration of approved leave.

Please note that if your scholarship payments are suspended for more than 18 months due to non-enrolment your scholarship will be discontinued.

4. Refund of Fees/Stipend

Unless specified otherwise in the offer letter, recipients who fail to uphold the requirements of the Scholarship/Award and is subsequently withdrawn, or who choose to discontinue their program of study, are not obligated to return any funds received during status as an actively enrolled student at UNSW. However, may be expected to return funds obtained during periods when they did not qualify as an active student in the relevant program or study load at UNSW.

5. Multiple Scholarships/Awards

Unless specified otherwise in the offer letter, recipients may not hold more than one UNSW Scholarship/Award concurrently except for any other Commonwealth Government funded scholarship. Recipients who are considering accepting or holding multiple Scholarships/Awards other than those listed above must contact UNSW Scholarships in writing for prior approval.

6.Centrelink/Australian Taxation Office

All Scholarship/Award recipients should be aware that stipends may be taken into account by Centrelink and may therefore affect eligibility for Centrelink benefits.
