The General Merit Scholarships for Indigenous Undergraduate Students Commencing Term 1, 2026 aims to encourage and assist Indigenous Australian students to undertake study at UNSW.


Undergraduate Commencing Scholarships - Application Required


You must submit an application to be considered for the following scholarships. More scholarships may be added to this list progressively.


Scholarship Value & Duration Eligibility & Selection Criteria
Mr and Mrs Ngiam Tong Yuen Family Scholarship (UGCE1187)

$10,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program

Eligibility
  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing any undergraduate program at UNSW.

Selection Criteria

  • Academic Merit
  • Leadership skills (school, workplace or community)
  • Extra-curricular activities (sporting, cultural activities, volunteer/work experience)
  • Aptitude and commitment to studies
Nura Gili Award (UGCE1213)

$6,044 for 1 year

Eligibility
  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing any undergraduate program at UNSW.

Selection Criteria

  • Academic Merit
  • Leadership skills (school, workplace or community)
  • Extra-curricular activities (sporting, cultural activities, volunteer/work experience)
  • Aptitude and commitment to studies
Engineering
Faculty of Engineering Indigenous Scholarship (UGCE1028)

$15,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program (up to 5 years)

Eligibility
  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing any undergraduate program in the Faculty of Engineering at UNSW.

Selection Criteria

  • Academic Merit
  • Leadership skills (school, workplace or community)
  • Extra-curricular activities (sporting, cultural activities, volunteer/work experience)
  • Aptitude and commitment to studies in Engineering
Law
Merryweather Indigenous Law Scholarship (UGCE1387)

$5,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program

Eligibility
  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing any undergraduate program in the Faculty of Law at UNSW.

Selection Criteria

  • Academic Merit
  • Leadership skills (school, workplace or community)
  • Extra-curricular activities (sporting, cultural activities, volunteer/work experience)
  • Aptitude and commitment to studies in Law
Medicine & Health
The Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Medical Scholarship (UGCA1278)

$35,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program

Eligibility
  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing a Bachelor of Medical Studies / Doctor of Medicine at UNSW.

Selection Criteria

  • Academic Merit
  • Aptitude and commitment to studies in Medicine
  • Aptitude and commitment to a career in Indigenous health
  • Contributions to the wider community; for example, through sport, community groups or other extra-curricular or cultural activities
  • Personal qualities, for example, communication skills, evidence of leadership skills and/or teamwork, involvement in extra-curricular activities

Performance at the UNSW Pre-Medicine Program Exit Interview may be taken into consideration.
Science
School of Mathematics and Statistics Indigenous Scholarship (UGCE1268)

$5,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program

Eligibility
  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing undergraduate studies in a Bachelor of Science majoring in Mathematics or Statistics. Double degrees are permitted.
Note: Current undergraduate students enrolled in their 1st year of study at UNSW and majoring in Mathematics or Statistics will also be considered.

  • Aptitude and commitment to studies

You must provide evidence supporting the above criteria in your online application. Please refer to the Scholarship Application Supporting Documents for a detailed list of examples.

Unanswered application questions or claims without supporting documentation will not be assessed. Late applications/supporting documentation will not be accepted. Activities and achievements recorded more than 3 year ago will not be considered in your application assessment.

UNSW Arts, Design & Architecture Indigenous Scholarship (UGCE1390)

$10,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program

Eligibility:
  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Receive a full offer to any undergraduate program in the Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture at UNSW. Enrolment in a double degree is also permissible.
Selection Criteria:

  • Applicants will be assessed on academic merit.
UNSW Indigenous Undergraduate Business Scholarship (UGCE1328)

$10,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program

Eligibility:
  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Receive a full offer to any undergraduate program in the Faculty of Business at UNSW. Enrolment in a double degree is also permissible.
Selection Criteria:

  • Applicants will be assessed on academic merit.

While Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity is unique and sacred to every person, UNSW scholarships for Indigenous students will require proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity and heritage. If you have not already provided proof of identity and heritage to Nura Gili, any Indigenous specific scholarship offer made by UNSW Scholarships will be conditional upon receipt of proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage to Nura Gili as outlined on the Nura Gili website.
