A new partnership between UNSW Sydney and the NSW Waratahs will see access to elite athlete resources and high-performance facilities opened to the university and wider community.

Building on the University’s longstanding relationship with the rugby team, Thursday's announcement will see the NSW Waratahs relocate their head office and training facilities from Allianz Stadium to UNSW’s David Phillips Sports Complex and the construction of a world-class NSW rugby centre of excellence.

The centre, which is set to become a High-Performance Hub for the NSW Waratahs, National Rugby Championship and NSW Rugby teams, will help facilitate community and player opportunities for UNSW students and the general public and provide the UNSW Rugby Club with access to the Waratahs coaching staff and gym.

The partnership also aims to create further opportunities for engagement with charity, youth and community groups, and allow the Waratahs to reconnect with local community through new, more accessible facilities for members, supporters and community partners.

UNSW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Ian Jacobs said: "Sport is central to the UNSW student experience from our elite athlete scholarships to our social and competitive sports teams. It plays an important role in fostering our student and alumni communities.

"UNSW is proud to partner with the Waratahs, NSW’s premier elite rugby union team. Their focus on excellence and strong community engagement aligns with UNSW’s strategic goals. We look forward to working together to grow the game of rugby union in NSW.

"This collaboration is already in play with Waratahs Ned Hanigan, Andrew Deegan and Andrew Kellaway supported through the UNSW elite athletes and performers support program. The program assists students with flexible study options and other benefits."

UNSW Vice-President Campus Life and Community Engagement Neil Morris said the partnership was not just about high-performers.

"Whether you’re playing at an elite level or just for fun, sport helps you understand and respect other people’s participation. We’re keen to foster an inclusive sports experience at UNSW that helps students achieve their maximum potential."

The Waratahs move into their temporary training accommodation at David Phillips Sports Complex on Thursday. Allianz Stadium will continue to host the Waratahs’ home games.
